It ain't over 'til the Big Papi swings December 19, 2007 Love the player on the field, and he tells a likeable off the field story. Easy, light reading and a welcome gift for any member of Red Sox nation. Nothing deep here. As many cliches as the average sports bio, but I wasn't looking for a Philip Roth novel, you know?
Review for Big Papi; by Molly F December 14, 2007 Big Papi is a story of courage, confidence, and perseverance. It is the story of David Ortiz, one of the most beloved baseball players of all time. David Ortiz himself wrote this book, along with Tony Massarotti, a baseball writer for the Boston Herald. You get a real insight into what was going on inside "Big Papi's" head during his triumphs and his defeats. Some chapters are written in autobiography style, with Ortiz talking about what happened along with what he was feeling. Other chapters are written by Tony Massaroti telling the facts about what was going on. When baseball fans watch Ortiz on television or even at Fenway Park, they see him hit homerun after homerun. However, there is a lot more to the record-breaking designated hitter that you would think. David Americo Oritz Arias was born in the Dominican Republic. Ortiz eventually started playing in a Dominican Program. From there he started working out with the Florida Marlins. He was then signed by the Seattle Mariners. After that he was traded to the Minnesota Twins. After a few seasons filled with ups and downs, Ortiz was released. With the help of a fellow player, he joined the Boston Red Sox where he became the legend that he is today. The book continues to talk about his life as a Red Sox player and the challenges that he had to overcome. I really enjoyed reading Big Papi. One of my favorite things about this book is the way that Ortiz talks to the audience. "Big Papi. Wherever I go now, bro, that's what people call me. I'm serious." He is very casual in his writing and it gives me a better understanding of what he is talking about. Before reading this book, I always thought that Ortiz was just a naturally talented player, but now I know that it wasn't that easy. He has had as many, if not more, struggles as anybody else. He has had to work extremely hard throughout his life to achieve his dream. I would recommend this book. Even if don't like the Red Sox, the life of David Ortiz is very interesting and inspirational.
Big Papi is the man!! November 5, 2007 If you're a Red Sox fan you should definitely read this book. It's a great story and you learn a lot more about Ortiz than you probably know. He does use the word "bro" a lot which kind of gets irritating but you can overlook that. He also does repeat himself a couple of times. But all in all it was a fun book to read and gave a great insight into what makes Big Papi tick. Congrats Ortiz on another World Series win!!
big papi August 2, 2007 im a kid from dallas,tx and im a huge red sox fan. i read this book at camp and i loved it. it talks about the red sox, big papi, and other teams he has played for. it talks about red sox history and shows how good of a guy david ortiz is. this is the best book ive ever read.
Entertaining August 2, 2007 An entertaining book about a good ball-player. (Probably much better reading if you are a Red Sox fan). David Ortiz is another example of what one can do if they put their mind to it. A quick read, but only entertaining.
